42. 23/XI/24: Trainspotting
I just finished watching Trainspotting, and it was quite nice
it's definitely a difficult story to wrap around, with characters difficult to understand, sometimes difficult even to stand
Begbie is a fucking dick during the entire film
and even though I see the tiniest bit of myself in Begbie, with his paranoia and his short temper, I still can't bring myself to even start to justify what he does
poor Tommy did nothing wrong, his only mistake was having that circle of supposed friends
Renton just managed to make his life crumble apart. first with the videotapes, and later with letting him try heroin
my heart sank when I saw what Tommy's flat had turned into. it was indistinguishable from Mother Superior and it just made me feel so sorry for him
yet Renton looked at him so nonchalantly. I was expecting him to say something on the topic of being sorry. but no. he just gives him more money, to keep fueling his addiction
Spud too just had a bad circle around him, he let himself be pushed and kicked around as well, the poor thing
and when Begbie came to Renton's house in London while he had the real estate job, I kind of expected it, the miserable parasite that he is
but Sick Boy joining in as well? that was even more shoking somehow, more unexpected. Sick Boy had enough self respect to not stoop so low. or at least I thought he did
the scene in Mother Superior after the trial is funny though, how the person who's preparing the drugs treats Renton with so many formalities
his manner of speech, taking his jacket off, the needle on a paper towel...
but why call for a taxi and not an ambulance? the ambulance wouldn't have costed Renton any money and they would've taken care of him sooner
I also felt like I miss a lot of stuff. Diane didn't get enough screen time, you don't see Tommy's descent at all (only that one scene where Renton gives him more money), you don't see Renton's interview either or really any comment about him getting the real estate job it's just revealed in one scene
and we got no explanation behind Tommy taking the cast out to the countryside. still a good speech from Renton about how Scotland is appalling, it did feel heartfelt
Renton did try to get better, and he succeeded. he became a real estate agent, he became clean. but then Begbie and Sick Boy came of course
at least he was kind enough to leave some money for Spud at the end
I'd give it an 8 out of 10. not enough trains were spotted
shit here's something I forgot
the scene where Renton is locked in his bedroom by his parents is fucking genius
there you can SEE how everything is catching up to him, everything is flashing back to him. he's recognizing his own mistakes and his guilt
it was a very tense scene and the tension served it very well
sometimes though, it felt a bit disconnected how Renton was saying some things in the background of the film. it felt like the voice didn't really belong in some places, but it's still a literary device that helps understand the story and tie it together
